EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is an evidence-based treatment modality utilized for trauma treatment and other related disorders. It is 1 of 2 evidence-based treatments for PTSD. The other is trauma focused CBT, which I am also certified in. The technique uses eye movement, or auditory or tactile activation, to produce bilateral brain stimulation. This facilitates the processing and desensitization of traumatic memory that has not been effectively processed. Because of the frequency of co-occurring PTSD, trauma and high ACE scores in the addiction population, EMDR is a useful modality in the substance abuse treatment setting.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches. To date, EMDR therapy has helped millions of people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress.
